Castle Green Pavilion – Project Overview
Completed in September 2025, the Castle Green Pavilion is a prominent public project located on the edge of the River Wye, overlooking Bishop’s Meadows in Hereford. The scheme forms part of a wider regeneration programme supported by funding from the Stronger Towns Fund and was delivered for the client, Friends of the Castle Green.
This project involved sensitive works to a Grade II listed pavilion, requiring close coordination with conservation bodies and strict adherence to historical construction standards. Board members from Friends of the Castle Green were closely involved throughout the process, contributing to key design and delivery decisions at every stage.
A defining feature of the project is the new pavilion extension, characterised by a bold 45-degree projecting overhang with a terraced area above. The external envelope is clad in standing seam copper with a diagonal textured pattern, installed by specialist contractors due to the complexity of the detailing. Over time, the copper will naturally patina to green, complementing the surrounding landscape. All external joinery and balustrades were colour-matched to this future finish, ensuring a cohesive long-term appearance.
Extensive glazing plays a central role in the building’s design, including a floor-to-ceiling glazed link and a glass ceiling that connects the new structure to the original pavilion. Exposed glulam timber elements support the terrace above, providing both structural integrity and architectural warmth.
Internally, the building accommodates multiple uses across its floors. The ground floor houses a café restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, which has performed exceptionally well since opening and received strong public reviews. The first floor provides facilities for a Canoe Centre, including changing rooms and showers, while additional rooms throughout the building are available for hire as flexible community spaces, such as a yoga studio and art gallery.
The project was delivered under a JCT contract, working closely with the design and cost management team. While delays were encountered due to the complexity of the glazing package, these were managed through regular monthly progress meetings, ensuring transparency and collaborative problem-solving. Although the programme extended beyond the original schedule, the completed pavilion has been widely regarded as a success.

With strong public visibility, high footfall, and clear community benefit, the project stands as a landmark addition to the city’s riverside setting.
